John Lennon & Yoko Ono 'Double Fantasy' 1980 |
On December 8, 1980, the most well known living portrait photographer, Annie Leibovitz took the first Polaroid of John Lennon and Yoko Ono for the cultural icon, Rolling Stone magazine. Leibovitz set out to re-create something similar to the iconic kissing scene from the Double Fantasy album cover, a photo she had always loved. The three of them immediately agreed they had captured something perfect from the photo shoot. Lennon was so impressed that he made Leibovitz promise that the image would definitely grace the Rolling Stone cover. Annie Leibovitz was the last person to professionally photograph Lennon-he was shot and killed five hours later outside his apartment. In 2005 the American Society of Magazine Editors named it the best magazine cover from the past 40 years.
